South Africa’s Internet Service Providers’ Association (ISPA) says it looks forward to hosting iWeek 2019 as the event approaches in August and the final programme takes shape.

This year, iWeek takes place at Joburg’s landmark Indaba Hotel & Conference Centre from 26 to 28 August 2019. “We have a great programme focussing on practical issues for South African ISPs — dealing with pressures to police content, developing staff skills, and surviving in a rapidly evolving and highly competitive access market,” says ISPA chair, Graham Beneke.

As always, iWeek represents an opportunity for ISPA to get closer to its members while offering tremendous value to the event sponsors and co-hosts who are able to reach an entire industry through a single platform. Details on iWeek and its line-up are available at www.iweek.org.za.

“iWeek is always greatly anticipated thanks largely to the stellar programme that takes ISPA’s dedicated staff a full year to put together. This year, diversity takes centre stage. We have all manner of topics from Adrian Tiplady speaking about the Square Kilometre Array to Google’s Yolanda Mlozi participating in a panel discussion with SA’s leading telecoms regulatory experts,” explains Mr Beneke.

Other topics up for discussion include the ICT industry skills shortage, running an effective abuse reporting system, making the most of SETA registration, a guide to take-down notices, responding to requests from law enforcement agencies, putting security incident reports to good use, an update on cybersecurity legislation, the enforcement of open access models and how the market has changed since VANS licensing.

SAFNOG-5 will be taking place in conjunction with iWeek, so there will also be plenty of quality technical presentations for iWeek 2019 delegates to digest. As always, attendance at iWeek remains free. However, pre-registration is required.

SAFNOG’s primary focus is on building and sustaining regional, infrastructure-based communities throughout Southern Africa and the continent. The SAFNOG-5 conference will take place on 27 and 28 August while iWeek 2019’s dedicated ISPA day has been set down for Monday, 26 August 2019.

In May 2000 ISPA, together with SAFNOG, AFRINIC, ISOC-ZA and the Computer Society of South Africa collaborated on what was billed as South Africa’s first “Internet week”. Over the next couple of years, the name was shortened to iWeek, and a run of national Internet conferences began that has now spanned two full decades. Given this long history, ISPA is excited at the prospect of hosting a new iWeek format next year, the details of which will be announced at iWeek 2019.

Attendees to iWeek each year are ISP and WISP representatives, technicians, engineers, managers and business owners. In addition, iWeek also attracts a broad selection of Internet governance stakeholders, the legal fraternity, hardware vendors, academia, representatives from non-profit organisations working in the Internet space, and important government representatives.
