Press release: Internet Industry Bodies Gather for iWeek 2015, Cape-based Web Users Encouraged to Participate

The individuals and organisations that keep the local web running smoothly are set to meet at Spier Wine Estate near Cape Town next week from Monday, 7 September to Friday, 11 September.

Internet users based in Cape Town are encouraged to register and participate in iWeek 2015 as most sessions during the conference are open to the public.

Now in its 14th year and hosted by the Internet Service Providers’ Association (ISPA), the ZA Central Registry (ZACR) and INX-ZA, this year’s installment of South Africa’s premier Internet industry gathering will see the discussion of key technical, regulatory and business trends affecting the industry.

“iWeek has a long history of bringing people together to debate issues such as online content regulation, and the role the Internet plays in human rights, and these remain important topics in 2015. We have extended iWeek to five days this year, and we will be covering issues important to ISPs, businesses and Internet users alike,” said Graham Beneke, ISPA Chairperson.

For ready reference, highlights of the week include WAPA’s fourth Future Wireless Technologies Forum, the Internet Society’s global ION conference to SA, the Department of Telecommunications and Postal Services (DTPS) hosting of a workshop on the Virtual Cybersecurity Hub. This topic is particularly pertinent following the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development this week inviting the public to comment on the draft Cybercrimes and Cybersecurity Bill. The Film and Publication Board (FPB) will also host a discussion of its proposed online content policy with stakeholders. This following the Cabinet’s approval of the introduction of a Films and Publications Amendment Bill into the Parliamentary process.

The ZACR’s 25 Year History of .ZA will feature in a keynote presentation where a panel of Internet luminaries will take a look back at the history of the country’s domain namespace and a quarter century of Internet developments. Workshops on new and existing second-level domains will be hosted by ZADNA, and a general meeting of the Wi-Fi Forum of South Africa will also feature during iWeek 2015.

The business of running an ISP will be a hot topic during iWeek 2015. Energy management for ISPs, cybercrime in SA and opportunities for domain name registrars will be covered. ISPA’s SuperTeachers of 2015 will be celebrated during a gala dinner. iWeek wraps up with a series of Internet governance panel discussions hosted by the Gauteng Chapter of the Internet Society. Human rights, the Internet economy, and cybersecurity will all be debated by industry experts. Technical training is also running during iWeek 2015, covering DNSSEC, as well as technical VSAT training offered by this year’s iWeek gold sponsor, SES, a world-leading satellite operator.
